Visiting コーヒーショップ 海 | Coffee Shop Umi, a Retro Kissaten in Fujisawa

Near Fujisawa Station in Kanagawa, Japan, there is a retro coffee shop called コーヒーショップ 海, also known as Coffee Shop Umi. The café is known for its old style kissaten atmosphere and has been part of the area for many years.

A kissaten is a traditional Japanese coffee shop. These cafés became popular during the Showa era and are usually quieter and more relaxed compared to modern cafés. Many kissatens keep their original furniture, lighting, and menu style, which gives them a nostalgic feeling.

Coffee Shop Umi is located inside the Fujisawa Diamond Building near the station, making it easy to visit while exploring Fujisawa or the nearby Shonan area. From the outside, the café looks simple, but inside it has warm lighting, retro furniture, and a calm atmosphere. Large windows inside the café also allow customers to watch the Tokaido line trains pass by outside.

The café first opened in 1965 and is known locally for its classic Showa era design and traditional coffee shop experience. It has become a longtime favorite for both locals and visitors looking for a slower and quieter place to rest.

The menu at Coffee Shop Umi focuses mainly on coffee and light café meals. One of their well known drinks is the original Umi Blend coffee. The café also serves toast, desserts, cakes, and other simple café food. The menu matches the retro atmosphere of the shop and keeps the experience traditional and straightforward.

I liked their Umi Specialty Blend, it was smooth and well balanced, with a clean coffee taste that is easy to enjoy. The café also has a smoking policy where smoking is allowed on weekdays, while smoking is not allowed on weekends, which makes the atmosphere more family friendly during weekends.

Unlike many modern cafés, retro kissatens like Coffee Shop Umi are not focused on trendy interiors or social media style presentation. Instead, they are appreciated for their calm environment and comfortable atmosphere. Many people visit kissatens to relax, read, enjoy coffee slowly, or spend quiet time alone. The pace is unhurried, and the space encourages staying longer without pressure to leave quickly. It feels more like a place to pause than to consume, which is rare in most urban cafés today.

Fujisawa itself is known for having a slower pace compared to larger cities like Tokyo. Since it is close to the Shonan coast and Enoshima, the area already feels more relaxed. Visiting a retro kissaten fits naturally with the atmosphere of the city.

My first visit to Coffee Shop Umi.

In recent years, traditional kissatens across Japan have become more popular with travelers who are interested in older Japanese culture and Showa era cafés. These cafés are often visited for their nostalgic interiors, simple coffee menus, and calm atmosphere that feels very different from modern chain cafés.

However, despite this renewed interest, many kissatens are slowly disappearing. Most are small, family owned businesses that have been running for decades, often managed by aging owners who may not have successors to continue the shop.

As a result, some close quietly over time, taking with them a part of everyday local culture that cannot really be replaced or replicated. That is one reason why places like Coffee Shop Umi feel special today. They preserve a style of café culture that has existed in Japan for decades.

For visitors spending time in Fujisawa, Coffee Shop Umi is a simple but memorable stop. It offers good coffee, a quiet atmosphere, and a chance to experience a traditional Japanese kissaten that has remained part of the local area for many years.

This was my second visit to Coffee Shop Umi.
